Propping the orchard

I will never forget the time I came to visit after they had moved to the Hilltop Ranch. Carey and I were delegated the task of propping the limbs out in the orchard. This was done so that the limbs would not break when they were heavy with fruit. Carey got the tractor and hooked it to a trailer full of various lenght boards that were notched at one end. Up and down the hills we went propping limbs in the late summer heat. At the end of the day JP came out to inspect our work. He informed us we had propped most of the limbs incorrectly and we would need to re-do almost everything we had worked on that day. I felt guilty for dissapointing JP but I still had a great day working with Carey. I think this was also around the time that JP coined the phrase "too much wheel pressure" in the orchards.  This was another way of saying don't floor the gas pedal and burn the tires off the vehicles. JP was a hard worker and thus was able to accomplish much in his life. The opportunities the Mallons made for themselves would fill volumes if they ever wanted to write a history of their life in Hood River.
