Condolence: Dear Mr. Mallon,

Thank you very much for hiring me as a social studies teacher in March of 1979. You helped shepherd me into teaching and coaching and I have had an excellent career thanks to you. I fondly remember trying to navigate the "Ditch Witch" when we were installing underground cable for a new scoreboard. I think you enjoyed watching a "rookie" try to operate the machine. I also remember a fun hunting trip with Paul Cataldo in eastern Oregon, where I got to play the dog and walk the bottom of the ravine to kick up any birds that might have been there. I didn't do very well at that.

Many of the lessons that sustain me today I learned at Hood River Junior High. Thank you for the chance to begin what has turned out to be the world's best job.

Sincerely,
Byron Rice

Condolence: Jim was one of my favorite people and he was also my uncle. Some of my most magical childhood memories were created with the Mallon Family. During the time they lived on Montello Street was always an adventure when I came to visit. That was also when the old Navy ship was docked below in the Columbia River. Having a vacation with the Mallons was like visiting another country. I recall Jim taking us to Rooster Rock in the sixties when he had the old Chevy Nomad wagon. My wife Sandra and I surprised Jim and Shirley by showing up to their 60th wedding party a day early. It was wonderful visiting with both of them and the last time I saw them. I am very fortunate to have spent that time with them. May God bless everyone who is grieving the loss of such an influential man. Have a safe trip home JP. May the Great Scout Master of all Scouts be with us till we meet again.
