Growing up in Gene's Orchard

First I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Gene. He was one of the most kind hearted people I knew. He ALWAYS had a smile on his face. Growing up I lived in the middle of his orchard on Green Road in Dee. My sister Miriah and I, along with our dad (until we were old enough to do it by ourselves) would change the water in the orchard every summer, all summer long. As a child this was not fun at the time, especially at 6am in the morning, and during a certain time of year you had to do it morning and night. But it built character and taught me hard work. We became very good and fast at it.

Gene always looked out for our family, I am grateful for all he did for us ( I am sure that he did more than I even know about). I appreciate him hiring and employing many of the same workers every year, and that they were men of integrity. He would stand for nothing less than honest hard working men as employees. And if you were that, then you had a job for as long as you needed it.

Gene would be out in the orchard working, and tending to his farm, but if he saw that Miriah and I were home, he always stopped in to say hi and check on us. I will always remeber his smile, it lit up his entire being. Thank you Gene, you will forever be remembered by the Claflin Girls!!!
