Obituary for Rogers Carroll Wheatley

Rogers Carroll  Wheatley
Rogers C. Wheatley passed away from complications due to diabetes on July 16, 2012 in Gresham. He was 85 years of age at the time of his passing. He was born January 22, 1927 in Derby, Indiana to Lester and Audrey Wheatley. He married Glen Ellen Siens on August 7, 1946 in Quartzsite, Arizona. He proudly served as a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force for 22 years until retired, during which he was stationed in Texas, Virginia, New Mexico, Okinawa (Japan) and Spokane. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Eastern Washington University and went on to enjoy an 18 year career as a business teacher and coach at the high school in Cascade Locks, where he lived for 39 years. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, playing and coaching baseball, coaching youth athletics, square dancing and volunteering in his community. He proudly served in many leadership roles in civic and government organizations including city councilman and as mayor for Cascade Locks. He was a member of the Lions Club International – Columbia Gorge, where he served with distinction as District Governor, Elks Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was also a member of the Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife Glena of Gresham; daughter Sherrie Charbonneau and her husband, Garry of McMinnville; son Glenn Wheatley and his wife, Barb of Damascus; brother Chester Wheatley of Thayer, Kansas and 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Louise Biddle and Mary Schenk. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation (1010 NW 22nd AVE #144 Portland, OR 97210).
