One memory that I'll never forget, is the time as a child, my family went out to Denver, Colorado to visit Uncle Eugene and his new family. Bryan had just been born. We had rented a camper for the trip from New York out to Denver. Uncle Eugene loved going up in the mountains and he, Aunt Thelma & baby Bryan took their little camper, and we took ours, and drove up into the mountains. Our huge camper was left at the base of a mountain and we all piled into his camper. The road up the mountain actually ended, and became a one lane "pass". The snow had softened the "pass" which was just dirt, so Uncle Eugene thought it best to walk ahead of our vehicles to test the ground to see if it would take the weight of the camper. Well, that worked for a while and then it didn't. We sunk down in so bad that the mud was above the bottom of the doors. WE WERE VERY STUCK, with no winch. We started gathering rocks to throw under the wheels, but the rocks just disappeared into the muck. After that idea failed, somehow, I had been elected to accompany my father to walk back down to the base of the mountain to get our huge camper and drive back up to where everyone was waiting our return. I was scared to death, as I thought that a bear or some other animal would get us. Everyone else stayed up on the mountain. We got to our camper some time later, and jouneyed back up the mountan with it. Dad & Uncle Eugene hooked up the two trucks so that our camper could attempt to pull him out. That was the most horrifying ordeal. The wheels of our huge camper were bouncing and skipping, trying to pull Uncle Eugene's truck out of the mud and with every bounce, our camper got closer to the cliff. There were no guard rails and we were basically on our own. Everyone was screaming that our camper was going to go over the side of the mountain with my Dad inside, who was trying his best to pull out Uncle Eugene's camper. Well, suddenly, I believe because of our prayers, Uncle Eugene's camper slowly started to come up out of the mud. both vehicles had to drive down the mountain in reverse as there was no place to turn around. I can't believe that we were actually all still alive after that ordeal. But now, I look back and remember that and cherish the memories.
