Winnifred (Winnie) Helen Cole passed away at Providence Brookside Manor in Hood River, Oregon on July 5th, 2017.

She was born in Walla Walla, Washington on February 20th, 1925 to Olivia Evans (Pratt) and Raymond John Baker. Winnie grew up in Southeast Portland, Oregon attending Woodstock Elementary School and Commerce (now Cleveland) High School, graduating in 1943.

Winnie worked at Fred Meyers during high school and Household Finance after graduating. She also worked in accounting for Richard Able Book Company before returning to a career at Fred Meyers, from which she retired in 1987.

She met her future husband, Daniel (Dan) William Cole at a bus stop at SE 82nd and Foster Road. Shortly after Dan entered the Navy Seabees in 1943 they were wed at Camp Parks (Livermore) California on December 23rd, 1943. While Dan was stationed in the Pacific during World War II, Winnie returned to live with her parents. Dan came home from the war on December 14th, 1945 and they made their home in Southeast Portland.

Daughter Sue Gail (Nicholson) was born in 1947 and son David William in 1949. In 1951 they moved to the Woodstock area of SE Portland where they remained for 60 plus years before moving to retirement homes in Vancouver and Hood River.

Winnie and Dan were avid square dancers (The Record Breakers), bowlers, and enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. They often entertained poolside in their backyard, where the sounds of children were frequently heard.

Winnie lost her husband of 73 years early this year to Pneumonia. She is survived by son David and wife Carolyn of Vancouver, daughter Sue and husband Craig of Mount Hood, 4 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.

Winnie will be interred with Dan at Willamette National Cemetery on Wednesday, July 12th, at 11:00 O’clock. You are invited to leave notes and comments in Winnie’s Remembrance Book online at www.andersonstributecenter.com and attend the interment.
