Obituary for Vera Hawk

Vera  Hawk
Vera Frances (Jones) Hawk born September 25, 1921 at her grandmother’s home in Elkins, Arkansas to Roy and Sally (Frost) Jones. Vera passed away at the Hood River Care Center on February 29, 2012 and was 90 at the time of her passing.

Vera returned at 6 months of age with her parents to their home in Visalia, California. Vera graduated from High School there and attended Long Beach Business College. She receiving gold and silver medals for shorthand and typing in a state competition. She married her high school sweetheart Preston H. Hawk on May 11, 1941. She had two daughters, Sallee Jo and Judith Ann born in Visalia.

Vera was a retired elementary school secretary. She was awarded a lifetime membership in the National Parent Teacher Association for her years of service to children.

She and Preston moved from Aptos, California to Hood River in 1993 to be closer to family. She loved her family beyond all else. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, golf and water aerobics. Her great enjoyment was volunteering in the community at Westside Elementary School, Hood River Adult Center and Hood River Visitors Center.

She was preceded in death by parents, husband of 55 years Preston, infant grandson Ronald Quintana and canine companion Ruff. Vera is survived by daughters Sallee Gaines (partner Curt) and Judy Johnisee (son-in-law Steve); granddaughters Kimberly McDoal (husband Jim) and Michelle Cochran (husband Shaun); step granddaughter Jennifer Edling (husband Frank); great grandchildren Jordan and Jada McDoal; step great grandchildren Jacob, Joshua and Amanda Edling; and canine companion Sissie.

Services are planned for 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Marcy 7th, 2012 at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031.

Memorials are encouraged to be made in Vera’s name to the Hukari Animal Shelter.
