Condolences

Condolence From: Terry Rhoads
Condolence: As an American expat working in Shanghai, China, I had the honor to work together with Stan in China tennis for over 10 years. Stan ran excellent elite youth tennis camps for Nike and a few years later for China's WTA tennis star Ms. Peng Shuai. The young Chinese tennis players (ages 9 to 14) loved to work with Stan...he was patient, kind, smart and very skilled in coaching young players.

Friends and family members of Stan might not know that during the late '90s, Stan spent a couple of years coaching and accompanying a young Chinese teenager -- Ms. Li Na -- to play the world's biggest junior tennis events such as Wimbledon, US Open, German Open, etc. Ms. Li would eventually became China's most famous female superstar athlete, winning two Grand Slam tennis titles (French Open and Australian Open) and reaching #2 in the world tennis rankings. I loved to listen to Stan share stories about his work with the teenage Li Na.

Last week, I informed Ms. Wei Zhan Lan, a 20-year-old Chinese pro tennis player that Stan had passed and she openly cried. Ms. Wei first trained with Stan when she was 10 years old....a few years later, Stan visited Ms. Wei and her family in Hefei, Anhui. Stan told me the visit was a lot of fun....but the family took Stan on a mountain hike and poor Stan said he kept his eyes closed most of the time as they climbed a very steep mountain trail.

The Tamura Family should take great pride that Stan's excellent work skills and easy-going personality made him a very popular person with numerous tennis players / coaches / officials in China & Asia. I last visited with Stan during an April visit to Portland....we had a wonderful dinner on the waterfront and shared a lot of laughs about his working experiences in China/Asia. I work with many Chinese tennis players and Stan was always so generous with his tennis advice and suggestions. I will miss you greatly Stan...please rest in peace.
