Life Story for Russ Bakurjian

Russ Bakurjian
This world became a brighter place on July 25, 1942 in San Francisco, California, with the arrival of Russ Bakurjian and it lost the sun on September 5, 2017, at his home in The Dalles, Oregon. When Russ was 5, he and his mother moved to Montana where he went to parochial school for two years. He said that it was true that those nuns really did smack your hands with a ruler. When he was in second grade, they moved to Hood River where he attended Coe Primary, Park Street, May Street and Hood River High.

When he was 17, he enlisted in the Navy. He only weighed 98 pounds and had to eat a lot of bananas to reach 100 pounds to be accepted. He very proudly served 4 years in the Navy and was stationed on various aircraft carriers.

During this time he met and married Dottie Perkins and they would become the proud parents of Mark Allen. The later divorced. On November 21, 1990, he and Beverly Bonjour were married and they were blessed with almost 27 years of happiness. People often commented that you would never see one of them unless the other was there.

They took many vacations around the United States and his favorite thing to do was get on his CanAm motorcycle and ride the lesser traveled roads in the Oregon country.

If anyone needed help for anything, Russ was the first to volunteer and lend a hand…Whether it was working on a car, patching a roof or painting a porch. You could always count on him to be the first one there. He will be sorely missed by his friends, far and wide.

Russ is survived by his wife and soul-mate, Bev; the apple of his eye, his son Mark; and Mark’s three daughters Samantha, Andrea and Heather. He was very proud of his grandchildren.

He had a special love for Bev’s daughter Merry, her husband Roger and their 3 daughters, Nora, Hollie and Meara. When Mera was born, he first saw her when she was just minutes old. He put his finger in her little hand and she held on and would not let go. Bev said that was as close as she ever was to losing his heart to anther gal!!

In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a memorial donation in Russ’s name, he had a special place in his heart for the USO, from his Navy days and Heart of Hospice, who was there to help care for him in his final months. United Service Organizations, Inc. PO Box 96860 Washington DC 20077-7677; Heart of Hospice 2621 Wasco Street Hood River, OR 97031.

A special thanks to Merry, Bev’s daughter, who came from Texas to help with Russ’s care during his final days. She has been a rock for Bev. Also, a special thanks to their close friends who were so supportive during the last months of his life.
