Life Story for Mike Laskowski
John Michael Laskowski “Mike” passed away on October 9, 2018 surrounded by family at his home in The Dalles. Mike was born on September 22, 1944 and was 74 years of age at the time of his passing.
Mike was born in Harlingen, Texas to John & Georgianna (Craig) Laskowski. He only lived in Texas until age six and then moved with family to Tigard, Oregon. Mike attended schools in Tigard graduating from Tigard High School in 1963.
Mike met Cathy in 1964 at a local restaurant (intentionally… you’ll have to ask Cathy the story of how she staked out the restaurant that she know Mike frequented) they married in 1966 in Portland, Oregon and soon thereafter purchased his mother’s house in Portland where they lived for 30 years. To their union they were blessed with three children; John, Amy and Paula.
By trade Mike was a diesel mechanic working for TriMet and other local transportation companies through the years. The family enjoyed camping together in Central Oregon and Mike was an avid hunter not only filling tags locally but also three different safaris to Africa… and if the taxidermy in his garage didn’t wow you the full-size Clydesdale and Hamms Bear in the front yard would. In addition to hunting Mike was a consummate tinker’er building from scratch a 1917 Ford touring car, his race car (an alcohol funny drag car) and worked with leather and wood too. Not only did he build his garage for all of his toys he did all of his home improvement projects. Mike did not enjoy ordinary… everything he had was unique and if it wasn’t he made it so.
Mike is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cathy Laskowski of their home in The Dalles, Oregon; children, John ( & Nadia ), Amy ( & Boyd ) and Paula; fourteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three very special friends, Larry, Bill and Lee; numerous other extended family and many other friends he has collected over the years. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kathy.
A memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at The Dalles Evangelical Church, 1001 E 12th St, The Dalles, OR 97058.
