Matthew Joel Helseth, 61, a resident of Mosier, Oregon, died Thursday, September 27, 2012 from cancer at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Matthew was born September 26, 1951, in Klamath Falls, Oregon to Leonard and Elizabeth Helseth. He grew up in Mosier and graduated from Wahtonka High School.

Matthew married Doris Jean Proffitt June 24, 1978 in Hood River, Oregon. They were blessed with two children; son Nathan and daughter Janell. The couple later divorced.

Matthew worked in the lumber industry as a carrier driver for Cascade Locks Lumber and many years as a lumber grader for Hanel Lumber Company. He was very talented with home repairs and remodeling and later was employed with an apartment maintenance company. He attended training courses in the water sewage treatment program and was employed with the Forest Service to help maintain the Multnomah Falls water sewage treatment plant until he was no longer able because of his illness.

Matthew was self-taught in construction and built his family two homes, including a beautiful log home. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and golf and was quite the sports fan, always tuned into the latest game. One of Matt's favorite hobbies was reading and he spent many an hour immersed in a magazine or newspaper and was always up on the latest news program or current event.

Humor and laughter were a big part of his life. Family and many friends were often on the receiving end of some of his quick witted lines and responses. Mostly Matt will be remembered for his love of animals and his devotion to his various pet family members over the years. The latest was his Pekingese, The Boy, who was his best friend and companion.

Matthew is survived by his son, Nathan Ryan Helseth, Mosier, OR; daughter, Janell Dawn Helseth, Portland, OR; and mother Elizabeth Jean Helseth, The Dalles, OR. He is also survived by his sister, Lenore Ping, Vancouver, WA; and brothers, David Helseth, Chico, CA and Mark Helseth, Cottage Grove, OR. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Helseth.
At Matt's request, there will no formal funeral services. The family will gather and celebrate his life at the Mosier Cemetery.
