Mary was a gift of friendship for my Mother, who learned that they had a mutual friend in Iowa. That gave them lots of conversation. Bud and Mary stayed in Mom's house while they were building their "forever" home in Mt Hood, just a stone's throw away. Mary was a delightful lady, in the true sense of the word, and shared so much of her deep thought and understanding with others. Our condolences go out to all your family, Katherine and Russ. We were privileged to know her!

Years ago, Mary spent a day with me in the basket storage area of the Southwest Museum, and then a day with museum members. She was a powerhouse of knowledge, which she freely shared. Mary's book "Columbia River Basketry: Gift of the Ancestors, Gift of the Earth" remains a great legacy. Condolences to her family.

My mom, Betty Matt Nasewytewa, and Mary started to raise their families together in Nespelem Washington. I always felt a connection to Mary since she knew my brother Curt, who had passed away as a young man. Fast forward many years and a connection was made for my Mom and Mary. We were living in Vancouver and Mary was going to be giving a presentation at the Clark County Historical Museum and as a family we decided to surprise and honor her with a flute song done by my son Curt. It was like a grandson playing for her. This was also when she shared with us that my mom had been noted in one of her books!
Please know you are in our prayers and that Mary had blessed our family. We have also visited Joe many years ago for lunch in Stevenson.

Blessings and prayers

Stacey Nasewytewa-McAllister

I was very fortunate to know Mary while we were in a book club together many years ago. She was curious, intellectual, and kind. She left many gifts to all of us when she left this world, and we are all much richer because of her legacy. My condolences to Katherine, Russ, and all of her loved ones.

I first met Mary in 1981, when we drove up into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest to photograph cedar trees that had been peeled long ago to make bark baskets. In the 1990's we hiked into the Indian Race Track, so Mary could search for a special grass that had once been used in the weaving of soft bags and baskets. Mary was a delightful, talented and generous person, and I feel lucky to have called her my friend.
