Condolence: What I valued in my friendship with Kate was her absolute optimism. We would spend time grousing about the difficulty in maintaining a just and meaningful society both environmentally and socially and then she would get up and do something about it. Kate never seemed to stand still for very long, and she continues to resonate in my memories. A good person doing good things for her community leaving a wonderful legacy for all of us.

Condolence: Kate was steadfast in her convictions to protect the mountain. She was not a retiring shy violet when the Forest Service or Mt. Hood Meadows (ski resort) proposed incompatible uses for the mountain. She and FOMH saved Stringer Meadows from condominium development. She was a vigorous participant in the fight to deny condominium development on the north side of the mountain. She was tenacious and dedicated. She and FOMH fought successfully for the restoration and protection of the wetlands in the Mt. Hood ski area. When the Forest Service allowed development of the half-pipe at the ski resort, Kate was indignant and the Forest Service took a lot of heat from Kate. (Kate was right.) She was totally dedicated to the ecology of the mountain. Kate took on her adversaries with fortitude, grace and kindness. No one went away feeling they had been treated unfairly. Kate was a remarkable person in so many ways. I will miss her greatly.

Barbara Wilson.

Condolence: Yes, Kate was such an inspiration! Her love for
Mount Hood and the Hood River Valley ran so deep.
We are all very fortunate that for Kate, this love translated into working tirelessly to protect both of these places that are so special. If only more of us would feel such a responsibility to honor our environment in this way.

I have wonderful memories of countless days spent on The Mountain with Kate. This usually meant spending the day hiking in Mount Hood Meadows Ski Area (MHM). She was in her late 70s when I met her, yet Kate insisted on climbing up and sliding down the steepest ski runs in order to check each wetland, meadow, water-fall, and stand of huge trees she knew so well. She always came with just her small day pack that held one can of coke, one peanut butter sandwich, and her camera. I soon appreciated what a truly unique area MHM was and understood her message; it was too special to bulldoze for ski lifts and clear-cut for ski runs. As Kate tried to stop these actions and saw the degradation continue, she always managed to have hope and the strength to continue her work. Thanks to her, Stringer Meadows was saved. A fine tribute to Kate would be to do the same with the White River area just outside of the current MHM boundaries. Kate was all about protecting the land. May we all honor Kate by continuing her work.

Condolence: We collaborated on projects that endure, to preserve choices for future generations, as many interests would carve up, parcel out and dedicate our lands, Kate saw the greed that infected those developers who would spoil what took eons to evolve...wild places, that all children are in awe of, that we as adults come to revere, we still have it because you made a stand to put yourself in the way...to protect and preserve the beauty that nature bestowed on this land...God Bless you, may your feet be on green grass running free, you leave having left it better than you found it...Blessings to family and friends.

Condolence: If you behold Yosemite, you have John Muir to thank. When you behold the Columbia River Gorge, you have Nancy Russell to thank. When you behold Mt Hood, you are indebted to Kate McCarthy. She was a wonder, and we are lucky she was on the right side of the ledger.

Condolence: My friend, my idol, the person I most wanted to be like. She was a constant joy and inspiration. Oregon will not be the same without her. So many memories come flooding back....testifying together at the Timber Hearings, beer and nachos after a full day, lobbying, "deep powder".... our hearts go out to Steve, Tim, Kermit and Mike...we must gather one last time at Timberline on her 100th to celebrate a truly unique person. She will live in our hearts forever and Mt. Hood, in all it's glory, is a tribute to her.

Condolence: Thank you Kate for making such a difference!

That so much of Mt. Hood is undeveloped and will remain so, is an incredible - and inspirational - legacy.

Condolence: Kate was the conscience of Mt. Hood. She was an inspiration to me and countless others because of her tireless advocacy for the mountain and the farming valley below.

She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. We will continue the fight to keep Mt. Hood wild and free.

Condolence: I remember trekking through Mt. Hood Meadows with Kate as an intern with CRAG. We were on a site visit to build our case against ill-planned snow making efforts by the ski resort. Kate had such a depth of knowledge, energy and spirit which inspired the work so many of us lawyers do from our computer screens. It was important to touch the earth with Kate and it was an honor to have had the opportunity to work with one of Oregon’s true environmental leaders. All my best to the McCarthy family as you carry on Kate’s legacy.
