Their only son William John was born Christmas Eve the same year. Jane went back to work at an insurance company while Mal completed his BA at UC Berkeley.

In 1953 they purchased a house in Palo Alto and raised their son there for the next twenty six years. In 1960 Jane went back to college part-time, graduating from San Jose State University in 1974 with a major in early childhood education.
