Life Story for Jack V. Thornton

Jack V.  Thornton
Jack Vern Thornton was born November 30th, 1923 in Dinuba, California and passed away October 14th, 2017 in The Dalles, Oregon. He was 93 years of age at the time of his passing.

Jack was born to Jacob and Margaret Thornton, the fifth of five children. He moved as an infant with family to White Salmon, Washington where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Columbia Union High School in May of 1942. Jack was hired as a forest guard by the Columbia District of the U.S. Forest Service and worked three seasons as a forest guard. He then worked as an apprentice electrician for the Klickitat County public utility district and briefly J. Niels Lumber Company and Kaiser Shipyard as a welder.

Jack met Audrey Thomas in White Salmon and on December 1, 1945, he married the love of his life, Audrey. They wed in White Salmon and built their family in a two-story log cabin – known as The Jewet Place, that overlooked the Columbia River. Jack always enjoyed making his home feel well-loved and as he got older, he discovered an affinity for planting and growing roses.

Jack found his career in the telephone industry; first with Interstate Telephone in Wenatchee, WA, then General Electric Company in Richland, WA, West Coast Telephone Company in Everett, WA, The City of Seattle, WA, General Telephone in Mount Vernon, WA before retiring February 28th, 1985 with over 38 years in the telephone industry.

After retirement Jack and Audrey moved to The Dalles, Oregon. He was an active hunter and fisherman his entire life until advancing age became a problem. He also enjoyed amateur radio, bird watching and gardening.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey; son, Theodore "Ted"; grandson, Merlyn; siblings, Mark, Letha, Earl & Sylvia; and nephew, Paul Cochran. Jack is survived by his son, William "Will" Thornton; daughter-in-law, Hannelore Kinzle and her husband, Ken; grandchildren, Natalie and Clayton; great-grandchildren: Tedi, Emma, and Amya.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M.,Tuesday October 24th, 2017 at Anderson’s Tribute Center Celilo Chapel (204 E. 4th Street The Dalles, OR 97058) with a graveside to follow at the White Salmon Cemetery (Snowden Road, White Salmon, Washington).
