She often spoke of her childhood often and the fun she had walking to school with her two older sisters and swimming in the cold water of Pretty Creek. Hilda enjoyed playing tennis, softball and basketball as a young girl her love for basketball carried over when she attended LSU (Louisiana State University) and was on the woman’s basketball team.
Hilda met and married the love of her life, Neal Chevalier and they had one daughter. She and her family moved to Pasadena, Texas in the 1950’s and Hilda began working as a secretary at Shell Oil and later became an executive secretary to the refinery manager in Deer Park, Texas. She was a member of the National Secretaries Association and Shell Retirees’ Club, Deer Park.
Hilda was a long time member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Pasadena, Texas. She was a loyal member of The Order of the Daughters of the King. She often remarked “faith is a big part of guiding my life.” After Neal’s death in 1984 she took several trips abroad with close friends. Hilda enjoyed music and nothing pleased her more than spending Sunday afternoon at the Houston Grand Opera or the Houston Ballet. She enjoyed laughing with her friends over dinner and good wine. She valued friendships. Hilda was a gracious woman who had a witty sense of humor.
In 2011 she moved to Hood River, Oregon with her daughter and son-in- law, Nealya and Calvin Cargill. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and attended until she was no longer able.
