Obituary for
George Akiyama
George Akiyama went to be with the Lord on September 9th, 2010. He passed away at Parkhurst House in Hood River, Oregon.
George was born November 14, 1919, one of five children born to Tomeshichi and Itsu Akiyama. He grew up on a farm in Oak Grove where he would return after World War II to begin his career as an orchardist.
While in the Army he was a part of the famous all Japanese American 442nd Infantry where their slogan was “Go For Broke”. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star Medal for his bravery in combat and meritorious service.
George is survived by his wife Ruth of Hood River, Oregon; two sons, Gary Akiyama and his wife, Anne of Camas, Washington and Wesley Akiyama of Yakima, Washington; sister, Kiyo Ichikawa of Owego, New York; brothers Nobi and his wife Florence Akiyama and Sab and his wife Betty Akiyama of Hood River, Oregon; grandchildren Kimberly, Amy, David and Katy; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Henry; sister-in-law Grace both of Juneau, Alaska and brother-in-law, Tom Ichikawa of Owego, New York.
A service to honor George is planned for 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 17th, 2010 at Anderson’s Tribute Center. Friends are invited to greet with family during a time of viewing Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Anderson’s. Private Graveside Rites will proceed at Idlewilde Cemetery.
