Obituary for Dortohy Kaufman

Dortohy Kaufman
Dorothy May Kaufman died Thursday, March 7, 2008 at her home in The Dalles, OR with her family at her side.
Services will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations). A reception will follow.
Dorothy May Arnett was born May 31, 1918 in Booker, Texas. She was the youngest of four children born to Chester A. Arnett and Sarah Annie Smith. In 1920 she and her family (father, mother, brothers Chester and Howard and sister Margaret) traveled by covered wagon from Texas to Oklahoma and finally settling in Missouri. She attended school in Anderson, Missouri in the 20's (a school building still operating when her son Jack went to elementary school in the 40's). There she met and married Samuel R. Kaufman in 1936. She loved working outdoors in the fields and gardens. She also liked to play pinochle, take long walks with her grandchildren which usually included a beloved dog companion. She also liked to travel to see country music performers, some as far east as Branson, MO.
Due to bad health, Samuel, who was called by most people, "Pete", was advised by doctors to move west. They settled in Hood River, OR in 1949 where they both worked for Apple Growers Association which later became Diamond Fruit Growers. Pete retired from Diamond Fruit Growers shortly before his death in 1973. Dorothy retired in 1983.
Dorothy was a member of Teamsters Local 670. She was not affiliated with a local church but had deep spiritual connections, throughout her lifetime, to Mt. Zion Church in Anderson, MO. where her father often pastored.
Dorothy is survived by her son Jack Kaufman and his wife, Carolyn of The Dalles. She also is survived by three grandchildren, Jody Bynum of TX, Jack Kaufman, Jr. of OK and Ron Kaufman and his wife Rebecca of Mosier, OR. She also is survived by six great-grandchildren, Chris Bynum, Tiffany Kaufman, Araha Kaufman, Amber Godwin, Caleb Godwin and Kirsten Godwin. Also, two great-great grandsons Edward Bynum and Mehki (Kaufman) Johnson. She also leaves behind her beloved dog "Buffy" and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings, her spouse Samuel Kaufman and a great-granddaughter Angie Bynum.
Interment will be at Mt. View Cemetery in Hood River, Oregon.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Gorge C/O Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations) 1401 Belmont Hood River, Oregon 97031.
