Life Story for Carolyn Elaine Miller

Carolyn Elaine Miller passed away quietly with her husband Wayne, at her side, at their home in The Dalles, OR, on August 14, 2018.

She was born on January 25, 1955 in Silverton, OR to Betty and William Hamm. When she was a baby, her family moved to The Dalles, OR, where she spent most of her childhood. As an adult, she spent 10 years in Alaska, where her two children; son David and daughter Sherrie, were born. When Sherrie was 2 years old, Carolyn and the two children moved back to The Dalles. She was here for a time, before she moved to Taho, CA, with her father until he passed away. She then returned to The Dalles where she spent the rest of her life.

Carolyn met Wayne (Jack) and as they say, “the rest was history”. The couple married in The Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Portland, OR on May 11, 1996. They lived in The Dalles for a while, then moved to Bend for a year and then to California for six years. While in CA, Carolyn and Wayne became custodians of her grandsons, Devin and Christian. They then moved back to The Dalles with the boys. Christian eventually moved back to CA to be with his father. They eventually adapted Devon. Sadly, Devin was diagnosed diabetes when he was 12 years old. He went into a diabetic coma during the early morning hours and ultimately passed away. Although broken hearted, Wayne and Carolyn were eventually able to have him sealed to them in the Portland Temple for all eternity. The family is very happy that Carolyn and Devin have now been reunited. They will both wait for the day that Wayne joins them.

Carolyn was such a fighter. About 25 years ago, the doctors gave her a “maybe 10 months” to live. They just didn’t know Carolyn. After she and Wayne were married, she came alive again. She had her ups and downs, of course, but with the love and support of Wayne, they enjoyed 22 years of marriage. The last few years have been rough, to say the least, but after each set back, she overcame and hung in there. Even the last week of her life after 2 – 3 days of really scary episodes, she came out of it for 2 more “good days”, before she passed away.

Carolyn had many caregivers and each and every one of them fell “in love” with her. She was a remarkable woman who inspired all who knew her. She loved the Lord and was an avid reader before losing her sight. She couldn’t wait to read or listen to her scriptures. She loved to listen to the talks of General Authorities at the General Conference and listened to BYU every Sunday morning to hear them.

Her inspiration will continue to inspire us all. We will miss here deeply, but are happy that she is no longer in pain, is reunited with Devin, along with other family members who preceded her in Death.

Carolyn is survived by her husband Jack Wayne Miller; her son David Hartley; her daughter Sherrie Grotts; grandson Christian Chambers; brother –in – law Keith Miller and his wife Sherri; Aunt Frankie Hamm; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends.

Goodbye Carolyn, we love you and can’t wait until we are all back together again.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday August 18th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints in The Dalles, OR (1815 E. 15th Street The Dalles, OR 97058). A reception will follow.
