Life Story for Bill Cannon
Westlake Willis Cannon, “Bill”, age 82, died Sunday, November 19, 2017, at his Country Club Road home, where he and his wife Joyce Lee Cannon lived for over 50 years.
He is survived by three children, Tamra Krall, Renae Cannon, and Westlake Forest Cannon; 11 grandchildren, Kurtis Krall, Selena Krall, Mandy Blouin, Gwendilynn Turner, Darrek Smith, Bethanie Smith, Tyler Smith, Acacia Cannon, Westlake Cannon, Sullivan Cannon, and Tegan Cannon; 9 great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Brindle Krall, Sloane and Jet Smith, Greyson and Olivia Turner, Jude Smith, and lola and Finnley Hassebroek; a newphew, TerryCannon and his wife Jacqueline Cannon, a son in law, Del Krall, a daughter in law, Amiee Cannon, and a sister in law, Ruth Cannon.
Bill was born May 14, 1935, in Hood River, Oregon, to Westlake Cannon and Hazel Del Kneale. The youngest of four children, he looked up to his older siblings, Clarence, Richard, and Ruth. As an adult, Bill settled next to his parents’ home on Country Club Road, and in time Clarence and Richard moved close by as well. The Cannons shared their homes, their gardens, their chores and childcare, but above all, they shared their stories, often telling the same ones over a glass, or more of wine well into the evening. All this sharing engendered trust between them, if not always agreement, and Bill cherished this about his family.
Bill graduated from Wy’east High School. He was an athlete during his school years, and later developed knowledge of the martial arts, becoming an instructor for a time. After working at a few agriculture related jobs, he started a drywall business in the late 50’s and was soon joined by his brother Richard Cannon. Together they created Cannon Brothers Drywall, the go to drywall business in the Columbia River Gorge for many years.
He was one of those people who didn’t have a lot to say, but when he did speak it was clear that the loves of his life were horses, a ranching lifestyle, his love for the ministry in the gorge as one of Jehovah’s Witness, and his wife Joyce. Bill married Joyce Godfrey on the 26th of December 1959, in Hood River, Oregon. They were married for 52 years, until Joyce’s death in 2011.
Bill was raised as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was baptized into the faith as a young man and later served as an elder in his local congregation for many years. Bill had much faith in the scriptural promise at PS 37:11, 37. “That the meek will possess the earth and find exquisite delight in abundance of peace” and that the earth would return to its original state as beautiful paradise for all to enjoy.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at the Kingdom Hall of Jehova’s Witnesses located at 1619 Tucker Road, Hood River, on Saturday, December 2, at 1:00pm.
