Obituary for Barry Coleman

Barry Coleman
Barry Coleman, 1934 - 2016

Barry Coleman, beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor and friend, passed away in Portland, Oregon, Wednesday, May 11. He was 82. He lived in Hood River, Oregon with his wife and daughter for the last two years, after retiring to his home state of Florida in 2001. He was a scholar of classic literature, a writer, and motivational speaker. For most of his professional career, he was National Sales Trainer for Encyclopedia Britannica and The Great Books. Mr. Coleman was born in Sarasota Florida on February 18, 1934 and graduated from Sarasota High School, class of 1951. He was raised on a dairy farm in Sarasota and worked mornings and evenings with his father and siblings to tend to the farm. While in high school, he trained as an acrobat with the Sailor Circus Academy, known as the ‘greatest little show on earth’ after the Sarasota based Ringling Bros. Circus, ‘Greatest Show on Earth’.

Mr. Coleman served in the U.S. Navy as a Corpsman from 1952 to 1954; attended The Pennington School for college preparation from 1954 to 1955; married Faith Elliott at St. Martha’s Church in Sarasota, Florida, 1956; and graduated from the University of Florida, Gainesville in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. He is survived by his wife Faith Coleman, his sisters Gayle Caudill and Talley Zimmerman, his daughters Tracy Lopez, Colleen Coleman, Katie Rountree, Anne Coleman, and Grace Connelly, his sons-in-law Stephan Rountree and John Connelly, and 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many extended family members and beloved friends.

Although he was a businessman and national traveler, Barry remained a gentleman farmer at each of his homes, in particular, his 20-acre farm in Monmouth Maine and his home in Bushnell, Florida. He was a devout Catholic, beloved poet and storyteller and could make each of us laugh, no matter the circumstances. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and will be missed and cherished always.
