Obituary for Augustine Gonzales

Augustine Gonzales
On Tuesday, March 20, 2012, Augustine Gonzales, a faithful servant of God, gained victory from this life to meet his Savior. Augie died surrounded by his family at home in Zillah, Washington at 86 years of age. He was born on February 26, 1926 in Brighton, Colorado behind St. Augustine Church to Jesus and Jesusita Gonzales. He met the love of his life, Delores Martinez in 1943. They were happily married for 53 years. In 1953 they moved to Toppenish, Washington where they raised seven children.

Augie worked various jobs over the years, always providing for his family. He worked in agriculture, on the construction of Columbia River dams, as a custodian for Zillah High School and as a school bus driver for Epic. He was a wonderful employee and co-worker, always smiling, helpful and considerate of others.

His life was shaped by his conversion of faith in 1955 when he surrendered his life to Christ. Our father put his energies, enthusiasm and zest for life into serving his lord. He was a founding member of Iglesia del Valle, held many positions of office in the church, including elder and mentor to many. He constantly prayed for his family and others. Though he often testified in church, his very life was a testimonial of his faith in God and his walk with Christ.

Augie Is survived by five children, Juanita Cruz of Los Angeles, California, Louise (Dan) Armijo of Toppenish, Augustine Jr. (Maureen) of Portland, Oregon, Elvia Fernandez of Granger, and Sylvia Gonzales (Ken Beaner) of Anacortes, Washington, as well as four siblings, Josie Martinez, Simon Gonzales, Pauline Martinez and Lupe Hernandez. He had 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Augie was preceded in death by his wife, Delores and sons, Richard Jesus Gonzales and Aaron David Gonzales.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Iglesia del Valle in Toppenish at 7pm. A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Iglesia del Valle. His final resting place will be with his beloved wife Delores Gonzales at Elmwood cemetery in Toppenish.
