Alice Virginia “Ginny” Baker passed away on November 24, 2017 at Brookside Manor Memory Care Unit in Hood River, OR, surrounded by family. She was born on October 12, 1920 and was 97 years of age at the time of her passing. Life Story for Alice "Ginny" Virginia Baker

Alice Virginia (Ginny) Hughes Baker passed away Friday November 24, 2017 at Brookside Memory Care, Hood River, Oregon, at the age of 97. She was born in Granite City, Illinois on October 12, 1920 to Patrick Charles and Evaline Marie (Smith) Hughes.

Ginny graduated from Granite City High School in 1938. After high school she graduated from St. Louis Business College.

During WWII, she worked as an accountant for the Corps of Engineers Depot in Granite City. She was one of the first six civilian woman sent to Ft. Benjamin to attend Army Fiscal and Finance Officers School. Ginny was also a USO hostess at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis during WWII and was honored in the St. Louis newspaper for her countless volunteer hours.

Ginny married Clifford Arnold Baker on October 1, 1944 at the first Presbyterian Church in Granite City, IL. After marriage, they moved to Denver, Colorado. While in Denver, she worked for the University of Denver as a secretary to the Associate Dean of Students. In 1948 their son Charles Arnold was born and Ginny became a homemaker. In 1951 their daughter Cathleen Alicia was born. During Ginny’s years as a homemaker, she participated in many activities with their two children. She was a Den Mother for The Boy Scouts of America for Charlie’s Boy Scout Den. She also became a Camp Fire Leader for Cathy’s group and served as President of the group leaders. She was also a member of the Board of Directors for the Denver Camp Fire Girls.
In 1964, the Baker’s moved to Greeley, Colorado. Ginny enjoyed many activities in the community which included being a member of the Weld County Amateur Radio Society (call letter KB0MTN), member of the Mended Hearts, member of the Greeley Woman’s Club for 28 years, sang in the Greeley’s Woman Club Chorus and past member of the Weld County Genealogy Society. She was very creative and enjoyed many years taking creative drawing classes at the Greeley Senior Center.

Ginny was preceded in death by her parents, husband LT. Col. Clifford A. Baker and sisters Patricia Jordan and Rosemary Howson. She is survived by her son Charlie (Bernice) Baker of Anchorage, Alaska, her daughter Cathy (John) Jobe of Hood River, Oregon, and sister Jane Thomas of Granite, Illinois. She also had four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; Katie (Jeremy) Riss (Emma, Grace and Daisy), Kristy (Matt) Krueger (Benjamin and Nikolaus), Sean (Stacey) Driggers (Kirsten and Megan), Kimberly (Greg) Morris (Ansley and Jenna).

The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers of Providence Brookside Manor and Providence Hospice of the Gorge for treating Ginny with respect and dignity as she spent her last few months in their warm loving care.

A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Greeley, CO at 10:00am Thursday November 30, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate if contributions were sent to Providence Hospice of the Gorge (1630 Woods Court Hood River, OR 97031) in Ginny’s name.
