Obituary for Lee Roy Scranton

Lee Roy Scranton
Lee Roy Scranton was born on the family farm in Sumner, Nebraska on March 9, 1921. The youngest of 7 children, he was raised in a loving family who instilled in him the values of kindness, humbleness, and personal dignity that shaped his life and inspired others to strive to emulate those values. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse where he did well in his studies and in sports. He was awarded a college scholarship in basketball despite his 5’7” frame. Unfortunately, this was during the Depression and he had to turn it down as he was needed on the farm.
Lee moved his parents to Oregon in 1940. While in Oregon he met Connie Linley, the love of his life. They married in 1942 and spent the next 71 years together in a partnership of love and support that saw them through the decades. His tenderness and caring saw Connie through her final years of Alzheimer’s.
Lee was a humble man, and would not say that he lived a remarkable life. But those who knew him would describe a man whose life touched all who met him. He always found the good in everyone he knew and provided encouragement and support to everyone, including his co-workers and family members. With Lee, everyone else always came first. Even during his last days, he was concerned that his care-givers weren’t getting enough rest while they were taking care of him!
Lee loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing and hunting in Oregon. His favorite vacation was taking the family in the RV to a lake or river to camp and fish. He instilled this love of nature to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Lee passed away on June 20, 2016. He was 95. He is survived by his four children; Tom Scranton of Gresham, Linda Hughes of Portland, Carole Bast of Meridian, Idaho, and Vicki Poppen of Sherwood. He has nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
The passing of Lee Scranton is felt by so many who knew and loved him. A man who survived the Dust Bowl. the Depression and WWII, Lee lived a life of integrity and honor. He will be profoundly missed and never forgotten.
