Obituary for William Douglas "Doug" Penny

Dr. William Douglas Penny “Doug” passed away at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital surrounded by family on June 27, 2014. He was 91 at the time of his passing.

Doug was born January 19, 1923 at Rolla, North Dakota; he was the youngest of six siblings and the last surviving.

Doug met Bette Lee on Christmas Day 1943 when her father had invited two young Naval Fighter Pilots to their home for Christmas dinner. On July 12, 1944 Bette and Douglas were married in Snowhill, Maryland and to this union they were blessed with 3 children; Richard, Dawn and Copper.

While in the Navy Doug flew corsairs and Hellcats while stationed on an aircraft carrier. After Doug was out of the service he attended Concordia Lutheran College and then the University Of Minnesota School Of Dentistry. After Dental School the family made their way out to Grants Pass, Oregon in 1952. Doug had a private dental practice in Grants Pass until retiring from dentistry in 1980. He loved golf, gardening, bowling, power boating the Rogue River, musician, videography, photography, landscaping, hunting, fly fishing, snow skiing and a hobbyist jeweler. He was also a private pilot. In 2000 Doug & Bette moved to Hood River to be closer to their family. Bette passed away April 16, 2008.

Doug is survived by; children, Richard Penny and wife Cathy of Olympia, WA, Dawn Penny Brown and husband Jerry of Hood River, OR and Copper Penny Runyon and husband Steve of Chiloquin, OR.; Grandchildren, Kelly Smith, Kim Darling, Jerry Brown, Jr., BZ Brown and Tara Brown; Great Grandchildren, Kealy, Marley, Cole, Chloe, Dylan, Bella, Calvin and Carson.
Doug spent the last 4 ½ years with his companion, Frances Benton, who brought him great joy.
