I worked for Rubén from 1975 to 1988 as his technician at Washington State University. He taught me many valuable research skills and techniques which continue to serve me to this day. I had the opportunity to accompany him on two extensive plant collecting trips to Mexico in 1976 and 1978, where I got to know and understand him much better. It took some time, but I eventually earned Rubén’s trust and friendship. Before he retired in 1988, he made sure my employment in the Department of Plant Pathology would continue after his departure, for which I am continually grateful. Rubén overcame many obstacles in his life and contributed greatly to the knowledge of the Smut Fungi, and will also be remembered as someone who cared greatly about social inequities and sought to remedy them.
