Jean Ann Frederick Nyseth, born Jan. 19, 1921, in Hood River, Ore., passed away March 29, 2013, in Hood River with her family by her side.

Jean was a lifelong resident of Hood River. She was raised by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Fredericks, at 1215 Sherman Ave., where she was born. She was very proud to tell her stories about the houses her grandpa built around Hood River.

Jean worked in the Diamond Fruit Cannery from 1945 to 1981 when the cannery closed. She also worked at Hickey’s Market and Ed Lieblien Grocery Store.

Jean was known for visiting people in the Hood River Care Center and shut-ins around Hood River. She never met a stranger and always came bearing some little gift; mostly home-baked goodies.

She loved to visit Safeway, where she felt the employees were like her family. She was the person all the kids in the neighborhood called Grandma, and she took pride in it.
Jean resided at Ashley Manor the last year of her life, surrounded with loving care by all the staff. She also had wonderful care from her Heart of Hospice caregivers, whom she grew to dearly love.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Joe; daughter Sharon Kay Pendergrass; grandson David Carl Nyseth and great-grandson David Pendergrass. She is survived by a large and loving family: sisters Jacqueline Bayhi and June Schmedheimer; brothers Bill Estes and Robert (Bobby) Estes; sons Ed Nyseth (Maryann), Jack Nyseth (Caroline) and Ron Martin (Maria), and daughter JoAnne Abshire. Jean has numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The family has chosen to abide by Jean’s wishes and have no memorial services. Donations may be made to Heart of Hospice in Jean’s honor.
