Obituary for Shirley Winnifred Summers

Shirley Winnifred (Clark) Summers passed away on August 23, 2020 at Ashley Manor in Hood River, OR at the age of 98. Shirley was born January 31, 1922 in Butte, MT to Arthur Dellevan Clark and Anna Annette (Nelson) Clark. A native of Butte, Shirley graduated from Butte High School in 1940.

Early in her teaching career as a substitute teacher at Hillcrest Elementary School in Butte, MT, she had occasions where she taught her two oldest sons Larry and Clark. In 1956 Shirley became a full time teacher until her retirement in 1980. Shirley was active in the American Association of University Women's and Order of Eastern Star (past Matron) for many years. She also served as a volunteer for early voting and the Census Bureau in Lake Havasu City, AZ.

One of Shirley's pastimes was playing bridge with her lady friends, which was a highlight of her day. Shirley married John Wesley Summers in Butte, MT on August 26, 1945. They raised three sons and shared many great years together living in Butte and spending time at Georgetown Lake, where they moved in 1978. Later, John and Shirley moved to Lake Havasu City, AZ where they lived for more than 20 years, making many friends and enjoying life to the fullest. During 2005, they moved to Coeur d'Alene, ID. October 29, 2006 Shirley lost her husband of 61 years.

In 2007 Shirley moved into an Assisted Living in Hood River, OR to spend her last years with her older sister, Jeanne Huckaba who was a resident of Down Manor. Many nights were spent as "the sisters" reminisced about their long lives and how lucky they were to be together. Jeanne passed away in 2018 at the age of 99, just a few months shy of her 100th Birthday. During her time in Hood River, Shirley was lovingly cared for by her niece Nancy Radley and her husband David and nephew Bruce Huckaba who she loved dearly.
