Obituary for Oswald Leopold "Ozzie" Treichel

Ozzie L. Treichel passed away March 31, 2020 at the age of 91, while residing at the Regency Gresham Rehab Center, where he was recovering from a hip replacement. Ozzie fully intended on going home again. He wanted to go hunting; even if it meant only “riding around in the truck” hunting. He was still jovial and flirting with the nurses, being able to make them laugh.

Oswald L. Treichel was born to Herman & Selma Treichel on July 21, 1928. He was the 3rd born son of their 4 children: Franz, Walter, Ozzie & Hilda. His family farmed in various mid-west states, ending up in Minnesota in the 1930’s. In 1955 he met LaVern Wilking, a nursing student, at a local New Ulm Dance. They married on June 19, 1955. Ozzie and LaVern were married for 64 years before Lavern passed away in July 2019. Even while LaVern was in the hospital, Ozzie was heard to say, “It was love at first sight.” Most of those years were spent in Hood River County where they lived in the same house in Parkdale for 51 years. Ozzie & LaVern had three children: Connie (Ed) Knapp, Craig (Lori) Treichel, and Cris (Leo) Dudek. He has 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Ozzie was a logger most of his life. He did some farming over the years, and at one time had 10 acres of strawberries. He loved to tinker around in his huge shop and not too many years ago cut apart an entire combine to haul off for scrap metal. He and LaVern attended the Parkdale Presbyterian and Nazarene churches. He liked to play Texas Hold-em at the Hood River Elks Club, where he was a long time member.
The outpouring of love our Dad has received from this community in which our parents have lived for five decades is amazing. Ozzie was receiving phone calls daily while in the hospital and care center. Mail is still arriving wishing him well in his recovery. Thank you to the many friends and family members who knew and loved Ozzie Treichel.
