Life Story for Maxine Pearl Carter

Maxine Pearl Carter passed away July 26, 2017 at her home in Hood River, Oregon. She was born February 2, 1926 and was 91 at the time of her passing.
Maxine was born in Hood River to Walter T. and Lula B. (Steelman) Swyers. She married James Carl Carter on November 24, 1942 in Stevenson, Washington and they were blessed with five children. During the War she was a welder in the shipyards in the early 40’s. She was the co-owner with her husband of J.C. Logging Company until their retirement in the 1990’s. Maxine was an active mother and homemaker, she taught her girls to sew, volunteered with 4-H and was a camp fire leader. She was involved in the PTA when her children were in school. Maxine loved gardening, working with her flowers and canning fruits and veggies… somewhere along the way she was given the nickname “Pickles”. In addition to all of this Maxine worked in the fruit industry until retiring at age 70. She enjoyed camping, fishing and going to the Oregon coast. In her later years she and a friend, Norma Cannon, enjoyed walking and cleaning up Portland Drive.
“She really loved the time spent with her grand, great and great-great grand kids, she really enjoyed her newest one, Alan Wayne. Our mom was always there for us with love and support. We miss her dearly.”
Maxine is survived by four children, Susan Schreiter and husband, Larry of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Kay Sheirbon and husband, Joe of Hood River, Oregon, Dennis Carter of Hood River, Oregon and Janice Carter-Claxton of Hood River, Oregon; twelve grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter & Lula Swyers; sisters, Myrtle Morrison and Eileen Skofstad; brothers, Matthew, Daryl, Wesley & Fritz; baby daughter, Wendy, grandson, Larry Schreiter, Jr. and her husband of 69 years, Carl.
Memorials are encouraged to be made in Maxine’s name to; Multiple Scleroses (MS) or to a charity of your choice.
A service to honor Maxine’s life and mourn her passing is planned for 3:00 p.m., Saturday, August 12th, 2017 at Anderson's Tribute Center ( Funerals • Receptions • Cremations) 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031. Maxine will be laid to rest with her husband and at the Pine Grove Butte Cemetery following her service and reception.
