Marjorie Eleanor (Wilson) Gove, 87, resident of Mosier, Oregon, passed away June 3, 2020 at Flagstone Senior Living in The Dalles. Marjorie and Charles Richard “Dick” Gove were married on December 27, 1952. They were married 58 years when Dick passed away September 25, 2010. Marjorie was born March 21, 1933 to George and Vada (Lane) Wilson in The Dalles. George was first an auto mechanic in Mosier with his brother Harry. 1931 he bought an apple and cherry orchard for $4,000. When Marjorie was 9 years old, her Dad had a heart attack, she then learned to drive tractor, harrow, spray, prune and pick up brush. Her mother worked in The Dalles at the telephone company. Marjorie’s pre-teen years were spent with her Grandma, Aunts and Uncles, and cousins, Barbara and Phyllis, who became like sisters. Her parents taught her, “Never buy anything she couldn’t afford to pay for at the time of purchase and stay out of debt!” Marjorie met husband “Dick” when she was in 7th grade and he was in 8th at the Mosier school where they both graduated. Marjorie fell in love with Dick, he had bright sparkly eyes and the cutest dimples. He was shy and Marjorie could easily tease him and he would become so confused! Marjorie would often go to Calvary Baptist Church with Dick, his brother Bob and their parents. During high school Dick and Bob came to work for them and was paid the going wage of eighty-five cents per hour. When Marjorie and Dick were first married, they lived with Marjorie’s folks while building their new home across the road. They had purchased 1 acre for $300. At that time, Dick was on deferment from the US Army to work for Marjorie’s dad because of his health. The walls were up five months later when Dick was called to the Army. Marjorie continued to live with her folks while their house was being completed and until Dick returned from being stationed in Germany. Marjorie began working at the US Bank in The Dalles for $1.00 an hour when she graduated from high school in 1951. She continued to work at the US Bank for seven years until their first daughter, Marcia, was born. Over the next couple of years, Marjorie worked part-time at First National Bank and Oregon Bank in The Dalles. One evening while at a dance class, Marjorie and Dick met a fellow who worked at First National Bank in Hood River. Marjorie was hired and 20 years later she retired on September 5, 1988. She would work during the school year, but always took summers off for cherry harvest. During those years, Marjorie owned Cherry Lane Ceramics and taught lessons, was involved in the Mosier Grange, the Mosier Fire Department and the organizations of White Shrine, Eastern Star and Amaranth. Marjorie remained a member of the Mosier Grange for 72 years! In August of 1971, Dick and Marjorie went to Seaside on vacation where they had been going since their honeymoon. They discovered a small motel on the prom for sale. They purchased the property and due to their keen business sense and hard work, all of their businesses flourished. During their working years, Marjorie and Dick juggled the farm, taking care of Dick’s folk’s ranch, Marjorie’s folks, and working while their daughters attended school. After Marjorie retired from the bank, she and her friend, Shirley, began making items for the Mosier Christmas Bazaar. They had so much fun, that they participated in other fairs throughout the years; however, they faithfully returned every December to the Mosier Charter School. Both ladies had quite a following with many returning customers. Marjorie continued selling her ceramics every year up until last December 2019. Marjorie volunteered at a number of places after retirement. While her mother was living at the Hood River Care Center due to Alzheimer’s, Marjorie worked in the beauty shop for the residents. After that, she volunteered at the Hood River Hospital in the Gift Shop. One of her favorite volunteer jobs, beginning in 2001, was at Maryhill Winery in Washington. They “paid” her with wine, which she took pleasure in sharing with the family! Marjorie enjoyed many journeys to Hawaii, motorhome travels around Oregon, yearly camping trips and beach vacations with her daughters, husbands and their families. She also enjoyed hosting a number of family gatherings over the years. Marjorie is survived by daughters Marcia Sawyer and Marilyn Cooper, their spouses and families of four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
