Obituary for Leonard F. Mays

Leonard F. Mays passed away on December 2, 2020 at Oregon’s Veterans Home in The Dalles, Oregon. He was born at home on Avalon Way November 3, 1927 to Mattie Elizabeth Matheny Mays & Homer Elijah Mays. He went to Hood River County schools and graduated on June 14, 1946, from Hood River County High School.

He volunteered with the U.S. Navy and went to San Diego for 6 weeks of boot camp, then shipped to Norfolk, Virginia on a troop transport. Then on USS Consolation to Panama with a Sea Plane outfit. He was discharged in July of 1948.

Leonard went to N.W. Broadcasting School in Portland. His first job was as vacation relief in Hood River on KIHR, then in Coquille. He then went to Juno, Alaska on KINY, then to KTKN in Ketchakan. He then worked for the Alaska Road Commission.

In 1958 he went to California and worked at various jobs. In 1958 he went to work in The Pest Control Business. He took Melbourn Stones place in the business. As Melbourn had gotten a steady job as Doc on Gunsmoke!

In 1968 he came home to Hood River and went to work for SDS Plywood, then Dee Mill, Weber Brothers, Sheppards, and Franz Hardware. In 1983 he started his own Business: Mays Pest Control.

June 3, 1976 he married Annette Clark Winfield Mays. He inherited 3 kids with this Marriage, Cindy Winfield (Tom), Aleen Massey (Larry), and Wynn (Staci). His pride and joy are his four grandkids: April Winfield, Tyler Winfield, Jordan Massey and Travis Massey and four great grandkids Jonathon, Daniel, Quinton and Bethany.

Leonard was president of the Lions Club as well as filling most other offices. He belonged to the Eye openers, and then transferred to the Odell, and later to the Hood River Club. He was a member of the Hood River American Legion Club and was Post Commander as well as serving in other offices and projects.
A service for Leonard will be held 1:00 P.M., Friday, December 11, 2020 at Hood River Valley Christian Church (975 Indian Creek Road, Hood River, Oregon, 97031) and will be laid to rest at Idlewilde Cemetery. Leonard’s service will be live on Anderson’s Tribute Center Facebook page
