Lauraine Phila Curtis “Katie” passed away on January 27, 2019 at Providence Brookside Manor in Hood River, Oregon. Lauraine was born on August 6, 1918 and was 100 years of age at the time of her passing.

Lauraine (nicknamed Katie by her mother) moved to Hood River in the 1930s. She graduated from Hood River High School in 1937 and married Linus ( Curt ) Curtis in 1942 just before he left for military service in Europe during WW2. After he returned they continued to live and work in Hood River, seasonally Mom would pack fruit.

Curt and Katie developed many close friendships with neighbors and others in the community. They enjoyed many, many evenings’ playing cards with other couples and gathering with their friends. Katie also enjoyed bowling and was participated in the Thursday evening bowling league for many years. In 1972 she began working full time as a quality control inspector at Jantzen when the women’s apparel plant opened in Hood River. She asked Jesus to be her Savior in 1987 when led by a faithful neighbor.

After Daddy died in 1996, Mom began actively serving her Lord and became a member of the First Baptist Church . She and her friend, Mary Smith, cruised to Alaska as well as touring Australia, New Zealand, Norway, the Soviet Union and River-boating up and down the Mississippi River.

Mom continued to live in her home until she broke her hip. She recovered quickly and earned the nickname of “the Energizer Bunny”. After selling the house she moved into Down Manor where she thrived sharing life with 35 of her closest friends. She continued serving her Lord and proudly displayed a certificate of appreciation naming her the First Baptist Holy Roller for rolling bandages for missions.

On August 6, 2018 she celebrated her 100th birthday but thought it would be nice to also see the the year 2019. At the end of her life she was eagerly waiting for her time to “go home”, she died peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of January 27th.
