Life Story for Edna Muriel Hargrave
Edna Muriel Hargrave, 96 died at 12:05 AM on April 22, 2019, at the Hood River Care Center, in Hood River Oregon. She was a resident of Hawks Ridge in Hood River where she lived for the past 4 1/2 years.
Edna had three sons, Russell and Randy are living, and Robert died in 2009. Edna has five grandchildren and three great grandchildren, living in North Carolina and Mosier, Oregon.
Edna was born on July 7, 1922 to Fred and Alice Maunder. She was born in Southampton while the family was en-route to join Edna’s father in occupied Germany. Edna had 4 siblings, Lal, Stanley, Bette, and Brian. She was raised in London, England, and served in the Royal Navy armed forces during WWII. After the war she moved to America, got married, and became a naturalized US citizen.
Edna and her husband Russell built a house on rural land outside of Poughkeepsie, NY and raised their family there. Edna earned her high school equivalency diploma, then an Associate’s degree from community college, then to Vassar College where she graduated with Honors, and then attended Bank Street College in New York City where she earned her Master’s degree in Education. Edna worked for 30 years as an elementary school teacher at public and private schools in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Edna was passionate about all aspects of life, she loved it! She would get up before dawn, often singing as she made a cup of tea and charged into her daily activities. She loved children, she loved books, especially novels, poems, and children’s books. Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, and AA Milne were some of her favorite authors. She loved opera and asked that Nabucco by Verde be played at her funeral. She loved teaching, and she loved being a mother and a grandmother.
Edna’s natural burial and life celebration service will be 1:00 PM, Sunday, April 28th at Great River, the family's private land, on Carroll Road in Mosier (45°38'59.4"N 121°21'54.2"W)). A reception will be held at 3:00 PM at 1960 Dry Creek Road at Rus & Stephanie Hargrave's residence at 1960 Dry Creek Road in Mosier Oregon (45°39'01.0"N 121°21'14.6"W). A viewing was held at 1:00 PM on Friday April 26 at Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations) 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031.
