Edna was born on July 7, 1922 to Fred and Alice Maunder. She was born in Southampton while the family was en-route to join Edna’s father in occupied Germany. Edna had 4 siblings, Lal, Stanley, Bette, and Brian. She was raised in London, England, and served in the Royal Navy armed forces during WWII. After the war she moved to America, got married, and became a naturalized US citizen.

Edna was passionate about all aspects of life, she loved it! She would get up before dawn, often singing as she made a cup of tea and charged into her daily activities. She loved children, she loved books, especially novels, poems, and children’s books. Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, and AA Milne were some of her favorite authors. She loved opera and asked that Nabucco by Verde be played at her funeral. She loved teaching, and she loved being a mother and a grandmother.

My sadness is only eased by the joyful remembrance I hold in my heart for Edna. She charged forward in all of her endeavors with an indomitable spirit and it was a true privilege to know her. Indeed, my friendship with the Hargrave family profoundly affected my life beyond measure. To have had such good fortune for which I am forever thankful could only have been by God’s will. May He continue to bless us all.

I often wondered where in life Mrs. Hargrave went, but she was the best Kindergarten teacher, and the only one I remember for many years, as well as so many other people here in Poughkeepsie, New York. St. Peter's School, Mill Street, Poughkeepsie, PM Class of 1964-1965.

So sorry to hear of Mrs. Hargrave’s passing. She was the best kindergarten teacher this (very) shy little girl could have had (53 years ago). Thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends. Linda (Campala) Molinaro, St. Peter’s School, Poughkeepsie, NY alumnus
