Obituary

Alfred “Al” Stephen Guignard passed away peacefully in the care of his loving family at his home in Odell, on January 16, 2020, after an extended illness. He was 84 years of age. He was born in Hood River, Oregon on March 13, 1935 to John Guignard and Edith La Rue.

As the oldest of three children and the only son, he was introduced to the family’s orchard and
business located on Tucker Road at an early age. Unfortunately, his father John passed away
when he was only eight years old. Throughout his life he recounted the kindness and generosity
of several men that worked with his family, often taking him on business trips throughout the
Pacific Northwest, acting as a father figure to him. Despite everyone's intention to “show him the
ropes” of the family business, he would routinely sneak away from the farm and spend hours at
the nearby airport dreaming of flying, or on various “big adventures” with his best friend and
cousin David.

After high school, he joined the Army, becoming a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division,
stationed in Augsburg, Germany. Upon his return to the United States, he transferred to the
National Guard, allowing him to return to the Hood River Valley while still serving his country
until 1963.

As a lifelong learner, he enjoyed various roles during his 33 year career with Pacific Power &
Light, retiring in 1998. He obtained his pilot's license in 1962, enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping,
and gardening. One of his greatest joys in life was being an amateur radio operator (WK7E),
garnering friendships throughout the world, and “working” the ARRL DXCC List as late as
December 2018. He loved his radio so much, that despite his daughter's advice, at the age of
83, he harnessed up and climbed his radio tower to successfully make a needed repair.
Alfred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carolyn, his daughter Jeanie, and son-in-law Greg
Vieira. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary, and his beloved son Stephen.

At Al’s request, no funeral services will be held. Later this year, when the weather is warmer and the skies are blue, a private graveside gathering will be held by his family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations) 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031. Visit www.AndersonsTributeCenter.com to leave a note of condolence for the family.
