Condolence: Dear Sarah and Li, I am very sorry for you loss of a wonderful husband and father. He was a highly respected faculty member in our department of Horticulture at Oregon State University. I really admired his research program at Hood River as he was able to understand the issues and conduct his research in a practical manner where the results could be of benefit to the grower/packer community and to other scientists. He made important contributions and we all had a great respect for him. I will always have fond memories of a generous and gracious colleague. My thoughts are with you. With sincere best wishes for you, Bill Braunworth, Department Head, Horticulture

Condolence From: Baolin Zhang
Condolence: Dear Caixia and family, I am so sorry to hear Yan's passing away so unexpectedly. Caixia, you and I have talked several times for my family to visit yours in Hood River, a beautiful place you love, and for your family to visit mine in California. We have been feeling so close before we have had a chance to visit each other. I have heard lots about Yan from Teacher Liu and other friends. I just watched the beautiful video tribute on this site. You have had a truly beautiful life with Yan. It moved me to tears. Though no words of sympathy can ease the loss you bear, still may you find some comfort knowing many others truly care and keep you in the prayer. May God bless Yan and your family Baolin Zhang in California, a classmate from Shandong Agricultural University.

Condolence: Dear Li and Sarah, My condolences at the tragic loss of your husband and father. Yan's life was simply too short. What a loss to you and your other family members and to all of us at Oregon State University. He was a kind, thoughtful man and a wonderful scientist. His excellent research greatly benefited the tree fruit industries and helped build the base of scientific knowledge for his peers. Yan was a wonderful colleague and we will all miss him terribly. I hope knowing that he accomplished so much in such a short life can provide some comfort at this difficult time. Bernadine Strik Professor of Horticulture, OSU

Condolence: Please know of my heartfelt condolences that go out to Yan's family. I greatly appreciated Yan's humanity and his science; he was a kind, thoughtful, and creative person, taken from us all way too young. It was a pleasure working with him in Chile last year and working on a book chapter on cherry postharvest research, which will be published this summer. As one of the editors, I am working to get Yan's memory included in the dedication of the book, for his contributions to academia and the tree fruit industry. He will be missed by many.

Condolence: Yan, how are you? This is a follow-up of our conversation a week ago. We just finished your cherry volatile samples, and will send you an Excel sheet within a couple of days. As we discussed before, we also should address the development of bitter taste in cherries after extended storage. Thanks again for your advices on packinghouse practices of peaches. Florida peach industry has been one of the fast growing produces in the last few years, and I may have more questions for you in the future. As mentioned before, you have established a strong research program in Hood River on postharvest handling and storage of cherries, pears and apples. It is amazing to make such a great compleshment in such a short period of time. I heard that you will not be able to continue this line of work. I am shocked and confused. Who can I ask in the future if I have question? First meet you was in the 2001 ASHS. I believed we will work in the same field forever. It is hard to me and many other friends and your family. But do enjoy yourself in the another world! We will miss you. Jinhe

Condolence From: Lynn Long
Condolence: I am so sorry for your loss. I very much enjoyed working with Yan over the years. Yan and I worked together on a number of projects as I worked in The Dalles as the Wasco County Extension Horticulturist, woking with cherries. Yan was always very kind to both my wife, Marlene and I. I always enjoyed working with him and spending time with him. It was very special to have had the opportunity to have traveled to Chile with him last October. I will miss him greatly. I also want you to know that I have been praying for both you and your daughter, Sarah that the Lord will bring you peace and comfort in your time of grief. Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do. Kind regards, Lynn Long
