Obituary for Pedro Herrera Galvan

Pedro Herrera Galvan
Pedro Galvan Herrera was born on May 16, 1953 in El Salto, Michoacan, Mexico. He was the son of Gorgonio Galvan and Maria Guadalupe Herrera. He grew up in the town of El Salto, as a young man he made his way to the United States to pursue a brighter future. For awhile he traveled around working at various farms. When he was 18 he found his way to the place he called home, Hood River. Upon his arrival and for the next 40 years he was the foreman at Bernie’s orchard. Bernie was like a father to him and treated Pedro like a son. He helped Pedro establish his livelihood in the hood river orchards. In the year 1988 while Pedro was working in the orchards, he met Maria Elsa Dimas and was very persistent in catching Elsa’s eye. Dad was a young bachelor among his brothers. Elsa’s mom was a coworker of his who had told Pedro that she was bringing up her daughter to live with her in Hood River. Long story short, it was a matchmaking game from the start. On their first date Pedro took Elsa and her sister Lorena to Pietro’s for pizza and ice cream afterwards. This was a start to something to last a life time. Soon after, they married and had been by his side ever since. When Elsa met Pedro he had two sons, Pedro Jr. and Jason Galvan, from a previous marriage. Elsa welcomed them with a loving heart. Together Elsa and Pedro had three children of their own: Maria Elizabeth, Miguel Angel (Mikey), and Kevin, creating one big happy family. Pedro always enjoyed being outdoors. His hobbies included: hunting, horseback riding fishing and gardening. He was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed practicing his marksmanship. He was also a big fan of eating steak. After Bernie Wertgen passed away Pedro was fortunate enough to work at Brad Fowler’s family orchard. Pedro put a lot of time and effort into creating the orchard from the ground up. He was very proud of the fruits of his labor, literally. Brad really appreciated his hardwork and loyalty to the orchard. Pedro was always very passionate about his work as a farmer. He passed on his strong work ethics to his children and was known for being a dedicated, passionate, hard worker. Here are a few of the family member’s favorite stories about Pedro: The truck was parked on a hill, while the parents were gardening on the hillside. Maria and Mikey decided to play in the truck. As Maria was playing with the steering wheel, she managed to shift into neutral. All of a sudden the truck started rolling down the hill. Shortly after Maria jumped leaving little Mikey to fend for himself. Pedro sprinted after the truck. He was able to open the door and jumped inside. When he jumped inside he regained control of the vehicle, saving Mikey’s life. Pedro Juniors early memory of his dad and uncles was their various phases they went through. A few of the fazes included: riding bicycles in a posse, working on jigsaw puzzles and flying kites in the Marina with him, his friends and two sons. Pedro Galvan was very selective of who he held close to his heart. He was a thoughtful father, friend and a loving husband. His closest friend, Cele Valle, he treated like a brother and was grateful to have him during his last few years. Lorena’s earliest memory of Pedro was that he spoiled her with gifts, gave her advice when she needed it and treated her like a daughter. Some memorable quotes include: His advice was short and to the point. He was always trying to instill positivity into his children. Juniors’ favorite quote was: “I don’t care what you do in life, but whatever you do don’t screw up.”Pedro Herrera Galvan passed away February 11th, 2016 at Legacy Immanuel Medical Center in Portland, Oregon.
