Obituary for Audrey Mae Thornton

Audrey Mae  Thornton
Audrey Mae Thornton, 91, passed away January 31st, 2016 at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, Oregon. Audrey was born May 10th, 1924 in a location called Gibsons Landing, on Howe Sound, B.C. Canada. At age five her parents emigrated to the U.S. with her brother and herself.

Audrey attended primary and high school in Portland, Oregon. Her working career took place in Portland, Oregon. She worked at Bruno Photography Credit Reporting Bureau and AT&T telephone as an operator. At age 18 she moved with her parents to Bonneville, Washington. She worked for the engineering department as a receptionist and telephone operator. She lived on the reservation at Bonneville during WW-II. She moved to Bingen, Washington with her parents and worked as a manual laborer at the tent pole factory, for the government. She received a ‘well done’ pin from the U.S. Government.

Audrey met her husband, Jack in White Salmon and they were married December 1, 1945. They lived in a two story log cabin known as The Jewet Place, overlooking the Columbia River. They learned to cook on a wood stove.

Upon moving to Wenatchee, Jack found a career in the telephone industry and they lived and moved at various times and various locations, finally arriving at Mt. Vernon, Washington. After 20 years of service at Mt. Vernon and a total of 38 years with the telephone service, they retired and moved to The Dalles, Oregon.
Audrey was preceded in death by her mother; Violet Mae Grant Thomas; her father; William Harris Thomas; her brother; Erin Thomas; her son; Ted Thornton; and her grandson; Merlyn.

Audrey is survived by her husband; Jack; son; William; two grandchildren; Natalie and Clayton; three great grandchildren; Tedi, Emma and Anya; daughter in law; Hanna Kinzle and her husband; Kenneth.
Audrey spent years volunteering at the hospital in Mt. Vernon, WA. and volunteering at St. Vincent’s hospital in The Dalles, OR. Audrey was passionate about flowers and a great artist. She will be missed by all who knew her and especially by her family and her St. Paul’s Episcopal Church family.
