Condolences

Condolence From: Karl F. Tesch
Condolence: Gene, a gentle giant, was associated with the Energency Services community for the past 28 years. I was privileged to work with Gene, since 1992. Being part of the Radio amateur community in Hood River County, he was always ready to serve and assist whenever called on. He will be greatly missed.

Condolence From: Nick Siripipat
Condolence: I met Gene a couple of years ago on a swim deck in Gresham and while I only get a chance to see him once a year (my kids swim in the Seattle are), he always made me feel like a long time friend. Fondest memories of a wonderful official and great man!

Condolence From: Bev Heller
Condolence: I met Gene more that 15 years ago as an official in Oregon Swimming. Gene always kept you on your toes and took a small meet as seriously as he did a big meet. He wanted all the kids to have a fair chance.
Most of us volunteer because our kids are participating and so we do it for the duration of their time in the sport but Gene exemplifies a true volunteer. He didn't do it for personal gain but for the love of helping others. He will be missed.

Condolence From: Mark Rieniets
Condolence: My association and friendship with Gene originated from officiating with swimming, but as I got to know Gene over the last 20 years, I realized I had gained a friend who had a natural talent to be able to see and believe in the best in everyone. Gene once asked me what I would like people to say about me when I was gone, and I now extend the same accolade to him - "we will miss him".

Condolence: Like Suzanne Brauer I always felt like I was the best swimming official when working with Gene. That is how he made us all feel. He not only wanted us to be the best we could be, but he made us feel that we were the best. He will truly be missed by all he touched.

Condolence From: Suzanne Brauer
Condolence: Every time I worked at a swim meet (of which there were many in the 14 years that my daughter swam at BEND/CAT/MHA/TTSC), Gene always greeted me saying..."I've got the best head timer in Oregon to work with today" and I always said..."I've got the best referee in Oregon to work with today." Such fond memories I have being on deck with him...what a kind and gracious man!

Condolence: We were deeply saddened to hear of Gene's passing. For us Gene embodied so very many wonderful things. He and Karen both were so very involved, they drew us into the swim team family and motivated us to do more. The efforts he put forward as a scientist, as an swimming official, as a radio enthusiast, all accounted for so much for the community and for us individually. He was a great example of how to lead a worthwhile life and he will be sorely missed. Our heartfelt condolences to the entire family.

Condolence: I will miss you Baby Brother. We shared not only a birthday, but much more growing up. Your passing has left a part of me missing, but you will be in my heart forever. Love, Your Big Sister

Condolence From: Tom Mclaughlin/PAC
Condolence: Gene contributed so much to the swimming community and will be sorely missed. It was always good to see Gene officiating a meet as you knew things would be run smoothly and any problems would be solved in a calm and logical manner.
Gene always had time to stop and say, "Hello" in a manner which said he was happy and glad to be at the pool. The Portland Aquatic Club staff, parents and swimmers salute the dedication of this "Giant" to our sport. Thanks, Gene for sharing your weekends with us.

Condolence From: Gracie Goddard
Condolence: I am so sorry for your loss. As a relative newcomer to the OSI officiating scene, I was impressed with Gene's gentle, unruffled and professional manner on deck, and the breadth and depth of his experience. He will be missed.
