Life Story for Betsey Otelia Smith

Betsey Otelia  Smith
Betsey “Betty” Otelia Smith, 95, of Hood River, Oregon, passed away peacefully Friday, December 5, 2014. Betty was born July 6, 1919 in Powers Lake, North Dakota. She was the second oldest of five children born to Erling and Lydia (Breding) Olson.

She was raised in North Dakota and moved to Hood River in 1937. Her many jobs in Hood River included working at AGA Cannery and Cafeteria and Ted Hackett’s TV and Appliance, where she worked for 30 years before retiring.

Betty was a devoted wife, mother and woman of profound faith. She was a devoted and active member of her Baptist Church in various capacities.

Her passions included spending time with her family, gardening, baking Norwegian food and homemaking. Betty was fluent in the Norwegian language.

She married Charles Smith in 1940, and had two children; Phyllis Evans and Dennis Smith.

Her husband passed away in 1963 and Betty spent her life caring for and raising her two loving children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Erling and Lydia, husband Charles, daughter Phyllis, and four siblings. She is survived by her son, Dennis Smith, six grandchildren, Stacey Barnes, Darren Smith, Ashley Fisher, Michael Nunley, Shelly Onofre, Veronica McCrea and several great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 12th, 2014 at Idlewilde Cemetery (970 Tucker Road, Hood River, Oregon 97031).
