Betty Jean Nix, 90, of Hood River, Oregon passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Brookside Manor in Hood River, Oregon.
Betty was born June 30, 1924 in Woodburn, Oregon to the late Peter and Julia Brachmann. She had resided in Hood River since 1954 and had worked for years for local businesses in their bookkeeping/accounting departments finishing her career retiring from the telephone company. She was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star, and member of Royal Neighbors.
Betty was athletic, enjoying tennis, golf, and bowling. Bowling was her favorite and had much success in the many women’s and mixed leagues that she participated in. She particularly enjoyed the many friends and camaraderie she shared during this time. She enjoyed tending her flower garden, as well as the challenge of doing crossword puzzles, and jig-saw puzzles, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She was fond of music and made sure her children had music education opportunities. She served as the church organist for some twenty years.
Betty is survived by her spouse Jack Southard of Maine; daughter Julie Tallman of Tumwater, Washington; son and daughter in law Ray and Karen Nix of Henderson, Kentucky; grandson David Tallman of Hood River, Oregon; granddaughter Tamara Tallman of Tumwater, Washington; grandsons Justin and Joey King; great- grandsons Jackson and Cooper King, and Riley and Tyler Kier.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John B. Nix; daughter Susan Elaine Nix; her sisters Helen Rouse, Agnes Jones, Gladys Brachmann; and brothers, Peter Brachmann, and Art Brachmann.
Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice of the Gorge, Hood River, Oregon.
Graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 29, 2014 at Mountain View Cemetery (1235 Tucker Road, Hood River, Oregon 97031).
