Life Story for Shiow Ying Wang (Shyr)

Shiow Ying Wang (Shyr)
Shiow Ying (Shyr) Wang, 73, passed away on Monday, August 11, 2014, at her daughter’s home in Saint Louis, Missouri, from brain cancer. She died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.

Shiow Ying was born in Taiwan on September 21, 1940. She was the eldest of six sisters and two brothers. She attended National Taiwan University, where she met her husband-to-be, Chien Yi. She traveled to the United States in 1964 to further her education, receiving a Masters Degree from the University of California, Davis, and a Ph.D. in plant physiology at Oregon State University. Shiow Ying and Chien Yi were married in 1968. Their children, Jean and Ken, were both born in Hood River, Oregon.

Shiow Ying began her research career in plant biochemistry and physiology at the Mid-Columbia Agricultural Experiment Station in Hood River, Oregon, and later worked as a plant biochemist and physiologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Maryland. Her research on the antioxidant content in fruits was recognized internationally.

After retirement, Shiow Ying enjoyed traveling and visiting with her children and four grandchildren. She enjoyed the beauty of nature and hiked daily with her husband. Although she traveled internationally, she always felt a special connection to Hood River. Shiow Ying will be buried in Pine Grove Butte Cemetery, in Hood River, which is in direct view of the Agricultural Experiment Station where she began her career.

Shiow Ying is survived by her loving husband of 45 years Chien Yi, their children Jean (Michael) and Ken (Alexandra), and grandchildren Matthew, Madeline, Kai, and Willa. She is also survived by her sisters Shiow Edith Shyr Chen, Shiow Wen Shyr, Shiow Fang Shyr Hung, Shiow Jen Shyr Sun; her brother Won Sou Shyr; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Shiow Jean Shyr Lin and her brother Tien Sou Shyr.
