Condolences

Condolence From: George Saponaro
Condolence: My condolences to the entire family. I had the pleasure of meeting Bob in 1997 while I was on vacation and backpacked in Glacier Park. After my girlfriend found Wagner's Duck Lake Lodge, we stayed there that year for about four nights in between a couple excursions in the park. Pretty quickly, I had the chance to speak to Bob about some of my hiking excursions. He was not exactly keen on my ideas of recreation-- going 20-60 miles by foot in ber country, as he had grown up there and likely seen many Easterners like myself (I am from New Jersey) or city slickers make some poor decisions that had some bad consequences. So I chatted with him often in those few days in 1997, and learned quite a bit about Bob, including the fact that he cooked one of he best rib-eye steaks I'd ever eaten, some of his travel tales, and some stories about the area there in Babb and surrounding Blackfeet country. While before that year's trip I had been to the Glacier area five times, finding Bob and Joyce's lodge made my trips all the more special. I returned there to the lodge several times in the next couple years, and got to know Bob a little. I certainly felt even more as though I belonged out there in Montana, which had by then become one of my favorite places on earth, when Bob told me that when I returned the next time, that I should call ahead so that he could take me on a different trip into Glacier by doing it via horses with packs. While I was not able to return to the area for a lengthy vacation with backpacking after 2002 after marriage and kids, I thought of Bob and his family and the wonderful times I spent there in his pleasant company. He was always a true gentleman to me, and I regret that I never was able to go on that trip into the park with horses that he invited me to go on with him. My sincere condolences, albeit a few years late as I just found the notice while I was fondly recalling the sunsets of August evenings during my trips to Montana. I am sure Bob is enjoying that beauty now always. George R. Saponaro Moorestown, New Jersey
