My Grandmother

My earliest memories w/Grandma would have been 4&5 years old..riding the old metal push pedal, cars up & down the sidewalk in Portland. This would have been late 60's early 70's. Our Grandparents home was all brick and a was like a castle to me, 3 levels,w/a laundry chute, that we little girls would terrorize each trip. Grandma has said she would finds balls, toys etc. for days after we visited. Grandma & Pa's dog, at that time, a FEE FEE...a little black poodle with a colored rhinestone collar. I am not sure it if was FEE FEE or the glitzy color but I adored that dog. Around 7 or 8 years old....I got to ride the train from Longview to Portland. Grandpa was at the grand Portland Train Station to pick me up. I felt like a princess. Grandma made homemade noodles for soup. She rolled the dough out and cut each noodle. I was amazed. Another BIG treat was COKE from a bottle w/ice. Grandma ALWAYS had Coca-Cola in a bottle...and I used the same drinking tumblr everytime. Grandma's favorite place to shop was the Lloyd Center at JcPenney & Meier & Frank. I remember shopping there with her. We rode in her 1967 (I believe) Teal Ford Mustang. I remember thinking ..."WOW...my Grandma is so cool...she has a Cool car too!" In early October or maybe September (NO JOKE) Grandma would start asking about Christmas ideas. As little girls, she would send the JCPenney Catalog and have us go thru and circle, highlight etc. Now w/4 girls and 1 catalog...you can imagine the demand for that catalog in our house. I look back now and don't recall most of those gifts....but the delight of knowing our Grandma would look at our circled, inked, wishlist was gift enough. As I grew older and met my Husband Tom...Grandma told me, more than once, what a fine man he is. She could see me...the inside me...and knew I was happy.....and this made her happy. As her Great Grandchildren came....at every visit, Grandma would have something for them. Grandma loved Kellogg's Frost Cornflakes...she saved each toy and let the Great Grandbabies pick a toy each visit. A a few years back....Kellogg's stopped putting toys in their packaging. She wasn't happy with that. It is ironic that she ran out of toys about the same time she moved out of her home. I never once, in all my life, heard my Grandmother complain....(well except when it came to the Portland Trail Blazers & Taxes). She literally shared her garden with us. I went home with starts & bulbs most every spring time visit. I am steadfastly proud & blessed to be the Grandaughter of Anna Mae Waterman, who loved us, unconditionally our entire lives. I will miss her for the rest of my life....but take great comfort in believing that we will be together again....with her arms wide open...like I have always known.
