Anna Mae Waterman “Betty” passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the Hood River Care Center. She was born December 5, 1915 and was 97 at the time of her passing.
Services are planned for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 29th, 2013 at Anderson’s Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations) 1401 Belmont Avenue, Hood River, Oregon 97031.
Betty was born in Jamaica, Iowa to Frank Herman and Florence Murl (Meredith) Raaz. She grew up on her family’s farm. She had a lovely youth with the exception of a malevolent goose who enjoyed chasing her around and a Shetland pony, “Tiny,” who ran her into the top barn door, breaking her arm. She loved attending community dances hosted by neighbors. Betty graduated from High School in Iowa and then worked for Montgomery Ward. The majority of her career was spent working in the beautiful US Bank tower in downtown Portland, OR as a payroll employee.
On May 17, 1936, Betty wed Raymond Lewis Waterman in Kansas. The two met when Raymond intercepted a suspicious-appearing fellow who was following Betty after leaving work at Montgomery Ward. Raymond walked Betty safely home, the start of a life-long partnership.
Betty and her family enjoyed many weekends and vacations at their Cooper Spur area cabin on Mt. Hood. She especially enjoyed feeding chipmunks by hand and fishing the East fork of the Hood River. Betty served on the PTA at her childrens’ school and was a Camp Fire group leader for her daughter, Susan. Betty was an avid gardener and was known for cultivating gorgeous clematis and double delight roses. She was also a wonderful cook, receiving frequent requests for her legendary apple sauce, raisin cake and double-stuffed potatoes. She enjoyed playing card games, reading Zane Grey novels and watching The Lawrence Welk Show. Above all, she loved spending time with her family who remember her as their greatest advocate and one of the most positive, encouraging individuals they have ever encountered.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her son, David John Waterman (Donna). She is survived and will be dearly missed by her daughter, Susan Rae Hartford (Patrick), David’s four daughters Jessica Waterman-Baker (Thomas), Stacey Waterman-Hoey (Richard), Sarah Beth Waterman, Meredith Castro (Jerry), and Susan’s daughter Jillian Cadwell (John), as well as her great grandchildren Madalyn and Ryan Baker, Aidan and Willa Hoey, Malynne and J.D. Castro and Lorelai Cadwell.
Remembrances may be made to Hospice of the Gorge in care of Anderson’s Tribute Center.
